Goodbye to an old friend
Saying goodbye to any member of staff is always difficult, but even more so when they are so integrated into the Lane End family.
Carolyn Worrall worked here for 16 years before her retirement at the end of March. She was an exceptional Conference and Events Executive and a real role model for those looking to carve out a successful career in the industry.
Over the years Carolyn has seen Lane End transform and grow into the successful training and events venues it is today. Her time here oversaw the swimming pool and leisure building become what we now know as The Pavilion as well as the more recent construction of The Cedar Club. From the drastic changes of our conference facilities to the ever-changing menus and food trends that we encounter, Carolyn was on top of it all and we will miss her.
Carolyn encountered many challenges throughout her career here with Y2K and particularly the impact of 9/11 which was hugely significant. In fact, following those tragic events, we lost 90% of our business from the US. Another memory that stood out for Carolyn was the Ash Cloud of 2010 following the eruption of Grimsvotn, Iceland's most active volcano. Our sales manager of the time and other staff were stranded abroad, delegates were unable to attend scheduled conferences and as a result some events had to be cancelled. She really saw it all...
But it was these types of experiences and an enthusiasm for her work that made Carolyn a very well known and loved member of the team. There are clients who had worked with Carolyn for more than ten years and she looked after the majority of our repeat business. Her strength was to build good relationships, maintain them throughout the years and we can certainly all learn from the legacy that she has left.
Thank you Carolyn and enjoy your much deserved retirement.
